Djokovic, Federer Drawn in Same Group at ATP World Tour Finals
The world No1, Novak Djokovic, and Roger Federer are in the other group, which is completed by Tomas Berdych and Kei Nishikori.
The Serbian has won three grand slam tournaments and six ATP World Tour Masters 1000 events this season, with his record standing at 78-5.
They are tied at 21 wins each, with Djokovic defeating Federer in the Wimbledon and US Open finals this year.
In the “Ilie Nastase” Group, Rafael Nadal, Stan Wawrinka, Andy Murray and David Ferrer will contest.
Two group stage wins would secure Murray the No. 2 end-of-year ranking for the first time while Federer has to win the title to stand a chance of overtaking him.
“Fantastic news that ATP world tour finals staying in Ldn for another 3 years”, he tweeted.
“I’ve had by the far the most successful season of my life and I’ll try from my side to keep going”, Djokovic said at the draw. As a result, Djokovic and Murray were automatically separated into different groups, but Federer received no such protection from the world number one.
Jamie Murray, in the season-ending finals for the first time alongside Australian John Peers, will play the world’s top-ranked pair, Mike and Bob Bryan, Fabio Fognini and Simone Bolelli and Rohan Bopanna and Florin Mergea. “All the matches are tough ones but there should be a few tough ones too”, he said.
Murray leads the charge in this group which is very winnable for all four of the players here.
Murray had initially been linked with skipping the event in favour of preparing for Great Britain’s Davis Cup Final against Belgium, but will now go up against fit-again Nadal, Warwinka and Ferrer.
Federer, mindful of Switzerland’s looming Davis Cup final appearance, pulled out of last year’s Tour Finals final against Djokovic due to injury.
“It’s been a long year but I’m also experiencing things I’ve never experienced before so I am also excited”, he said yesterday. “My body feels good, I feel fresh and hope I can play a few good tennis”. I’ve been training on clay for the last four days.
