Djokovic improves to 25-0 at China Open with 1st-round win
Novak Djokovic plays a shot during his doubles match with brother Djordje on Tuesday at the ATP China Open in Beijing. That was also her only win over world top 20 player.
The omens were not good for the home player when Djokovic broke at the first time of asking, opening a three-game lead in the blink of an eye. “She played very well, and gave me a lot of pressure all through the match”, added Wang.
Wildcard Zhang, China’s number one but ranked 219th in the world, could not contend with the power and precision of Djokovic’s ground strokes as he was broken immediately and soon yielded the first set.
The brothers won 7-6 (7/5), 6-7 (6/8), 10-5 over China-New Zealand pairing of Gong Mao-Xin and Michael Venus.
With 26 wins and no defeats, Djokovic joins Jimmy Connors in second place on the list of unbeaten starts to a tournament, behind only Rafael Nadal’s 31 at the French Open.
Wozniacki continued her momentum in the second set, allowing not single game to the host player, cruising to a dominating 6-0 sweep to get through the second round in 79 minutes.
“It looks like the match was under control with 6-4, 1-0, but then situation changed”.
Venus Williams, titleholder of WTA Wuhan Open last Saturday, was upset by Ana Ivanovic 6-7 (3), 2-6.
