Djokovics Masters win streak hits 30 with Montreal semi-final success
Andy Murray was in a hurry to book his spot in his third Rogers Cup title match, routing Kei Nishikori 6-3, 6-0 in Saturday’s semi-finals.
Djokoic survived two match points for the first time since 2012 in Shanghai against Andy Murray. This year, he is tied with five other players with three ATP World Tour titles, trailing only Novak Djokovic (6) and Roger Federer (4).
“I’m very proud to reach my first Masters semi-final”, said the 49th-ranked victor who levelled his season record at 18-18.
Coming off an opening match loss in Washington last week, Murray has also finding his footing on the Canadian hardcourts advancing to the final eight in singles but crashed out later in the doubles losing to his brother Jamie.
Novak Djokovic complained he could smell cannabis on court during his Rogers Cup semfinal victory over Jerome Chardy on Saturday.
“I’m excited, for sure”, said Nestor, who will play in his fifth final in Canada, but first in Montreal.
From there, the two-time Grand Slam-title victor held, before seizing the initiative with a lob to break Tsonga’s serve on his way to taking the second set.
“It took a long time to beat Rafa”, Nishikori said. However, in a match that saw three tiebreakers, Chardy advanced to the semifinals where he will face Djokovic.
World number one Serena Williams continued her march towards her fourth Toronto title Friday with a 6-4, 6-3 dismantling of Italy’s Roberta Vinci in the quarter-finals of the WTA Rogers Cup.
“You have to give credit to (Gulbis) for playing an excellent match”, Djokovic said.
The second-seeded Scot broke the Tsonga serve once in each set to emerge victorious in a match which finished at around 0130 local time.
Halep, playing her first event since a shock first round exit at Wimbledon, was happy to escape with a straight sets win in one hour, 35 minutes.
“It’s nice to get back there, especially after everything I went through last year with the surgery and dropping out of the top 10, a lot of questions being asked about how my game was physically and stuff”, said Murray. Despite improving during the match, he never had enough to trouble Djokovic, winning just ten points on the Serbian’s serve.
