Doctor guided weight loss programs are the most effective for losing weight
Patients can look forward to a more rewarding weight loss regimen by involving physicians in future programs.
Researchers have concluded that their scientific paper has proven the hypothesis according to which, physicians can improve their patients’ condition by simply showing support towards them. The study consisted of 63% of females with an average age of 55-years with an average BMI of 36.3 and it found that with the help of a doctor a patient loses about 6 pounds more on an average in comparison to the cases where the doctors was not of much assistance.
Notwithstanding the fact that the general rate of weight loss was modest, participants who answered that the primary care physician’s support did specifically help lost twice the number of pounds as compared to those who did not reckon the physician’s support as helpful. This was a two year long research that was controlled and funded by the federal government.
Medicare and private insurance reimbursements are low or nonexistent for physician-guided weight loss interventions.
During the trial, some obese patients worked to lose weight with the aid of health coaches while their efforts were supervised by their primary care physicians and they were asked to fill out surveys that asked their relationships with their primary care physician. The popular weight loss or diet control programs are having millions of members and the companies are generating billions of dollars in revenue each year.
A “quality patient-doctor relationship marked by good communication, empathy, collaboration, and trust is linked to better adherence to doctoral advice, medication schedules, and appointment keeping”.
According to Dr. Wendy Bennett, an assistant professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, “The trial supports other evidence that providers are very important in their patients’ weight loss efforts”. They are more effective for some individuals compared to other commercially available weight loss programs. Weight loss is a personal activity that could be done without the help of anyone. However, a study by researchers from the John’s Hopkins reveals that weight loss goals can be more efficiently achieved when people are helped by a doctor.
Survey results showed that nearly all patients have high-quality relationship with their doctor, but their relationship has little to no effect on their weight loss.
