Documents: Paterno Ignored Complaints on Sandusky
I was shocked, disappointed, offended.
John Doe 150 is one of 32 people to have reached a financial settlement with Penn State, according to PennLive.com. “‘I was insulted.I said, is that all you’re going to do?” According to his account, Paterno allegedly “just walked away.”
The formerly sealed court documents, which were released on July 12, indicate that there were many allegations of sexual assault by Jerry Sandusky before the first reports of such activity were made to police in 1998.
The documents also contain testimony from former Penn State grad assistant Mike McQueary, who alleges that Bradley knew of Sandusky’s actions as early as the 1980’s.
Doe 101 alleged other coaches – Paterno included – saw the boy showering in a locker room with Sandusky a couple of times, according to the documents.
A man, known as John Doe 101, recounted his assault from 1988 where he said Sandusky rubbed his back as he laid on the couch in his underwear.
The records had been filed during the university’s ongoing legal fight with its insurer over who should cover the costs of the millions of dollars Penn State has paid to end claims tied to Sandusky. Sandusky is in prison after being convicted of dozens of counts of sexual abuse of young boys. More tarnish has been added to Paterno’s reputation as a result of court records unsealed Tuesday. A lawyer for his family said elements of John Doe 150’s story “defy all logic” and there’s evidence that “stands in stark contrast” to his claims.
Sandusky’s lawyer has denied the allegations.
McQueary said Bradley identified the other assistant coach as Greg Schiano, now defensive coordinator at Ohio State.
McQueary said under oath that he told Paterno and then he said things that lead one to believe that Bradley and Schiano also knew of things that had happened.
McQueary said he told Timothy Curley and Gary Schultz – two crucial members of the Penn State sports administration team at the time – what he had seen. “And that’s it. That’s all he ever told me”. He later served as an assistant coach for the Nittany Lions from 1992-93 before leaving to join the staff of the NFL’s San Diego Chargers. Schiano was a graduate assistant at Penn State in 1990, and coached defensive backs from 1991-1995.
McQueary testified that this was true, and that both he and Bradley were indeed frustrated by Sandusky’s presence and would complain about it to each other.
Another victim, John Doe 75, was not interviewed for Sandusky’s criminal trial, but he described a 1987 incident in which coach Joe Sarra, also of Penn State, walked in when Sandusky had his hand down the victim’s trousers.
“Your mind starts wondering”, said Doe 75 in an expert of his deposition. “I think all those questions have been answered years ago”, he said.
A victim in the case testified that Bradley had walked in on Sandusky showering with him.
The university demands the insurance company compensate the school for the payouts but the insurance company countered that it should not pay because university officials systematically hid the allegations and never informed the insurance company of the looming issues with Sandusky’s behavior. He said Penn State was diligent in making sure the claims were backed up by sufficient proof.
The unsealed documents suggest other Penn State personnel directly witnessed Sandusky’s misconduct but failed to do anything about it.
