Dodge Barracuda Finally Coming Back, Next-Gen Charger in the Works
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles pulled out all the stops at their dealers meeting in Las Vegas as they reportedly showed a number of highly-anticipated models including an all-new Barracuda. A Jeep Grand Wagoneer SUV was also among the vehicles shown. No media was permitted at Tuesday’s event at Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino, and no cell phones or other recording devices were allowed in to the room where the meeting was taking place.
As for the Charger, word is the next-gen model will also use the new modular Alfa Romeo platform, finally lying the original and long-used Mercedes-Benz E-Class-based LX Platform to rest. It is part of FCA’s roughly $6 billion investment to resurrect and grow the Alfa Romeo brand to 400,000 units worldwide by 2018.
Automotive News reports that the Charger will borrow more from the 1999 Charger R/T concept and take on a less blocky appearance than today’s model, but the ‘Cuda’s appearance remains cloaked in mystery.
The upcoming generation of the iconic Jeep Wrangler was also discussed, with sources claiming it would have the same classic lines and off-road aptitudes when it comes as a new generation in 2018 and also increased fuel efficiency.
Several dealers, speaking anonymously, were told that they would see as many as 30 new or refreshed products on their lots within the next two years.
With a predicted launch time frame for either the 2019 or 2020 model years, it’s possible that the Barracuda might not be powered by a HEMI, but in fact, a twin-turbocharged V-6 in top form.
A potential merger, Marchionne said, “will not have an impact” on dealers, but instead will create a way “to strengthen the competitive position of the companies involved”. He said efforts to merge FCA with another automaker was “not a slash-and-burn strategy”.
