Dodgers place Kendrick on DL
The move gives the Dodgers a replacement for Howie Kendrick, who strained his hamstring in L.A.’s loss to the Dodgers on Sunday. This is the first trip to the disabled list for Kendrick since missing a month with a sprained left knee in August 2013 with the Angels.
The Dodgers’ immediate response was to recall recently acquired blue-chip prospect Jose Peraza from Triple-A Oklahoma City, where he hit.
Although he’s appeared in only nine games at second base for the Dodgers this season, that was his primary position in the minors. “We just don’t know how severe it is, and hamstrings are never going to be three or four days”.
Kendrick was third among Los Angeles regulars with a. 296 batting average and second in RBIs (49) and runs scored (57).
Here are the full lineups for tonight’s 7:10 p.m. start at Dodger Stadium, with Joc Pederson, Adrian Gonzalez and Yasmani Grandal all out of the lineup for the Dodgers.
According to manager Don Mattingly, Kendrick will miss significant time with the injury although the MRI results have yet to be released. He was replaced by pinch-runner Kike Hernandez, who remained in the game to play second base. Mattingly said with Kendrick out Hernandez will receive the bulk of playing time, though not just at second base.
Hernandez has posted a slash line of.429/.520/.810 since the All-Star break, going 9 for 21 with two doubles, two homers and five RBIs in 11 games. Every major prospect-ranking system had him in the top 100 in the preseason, some far higher.
Kendrick suffered the injury when he attempted to beat out an infield grounder, as Gurnick described: “Kendrick stretched to get to the bag first”. He was injured while beating out an infield single in the fifth inning of the Dodgers’ 13-6 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday night.
“We’ll talk about different options”, he said. “(Sunday) was not so good, but the day before, they threw four scorless.
“I’m not getting the “bullpen has been so bad” thing”, Mattingly said.
