Does Tyson Fury have to give Wladimir Klitschko a rematch?
Tyson Fury of Britain is the new heavyweight world champion after defeating long-reigning Ukrainian Wladimir Klitschko in a unanimous decision Saturday night in Dusseldorf.
Former WBC heavyweight champion, Vitali Klitschko, has expressed his shock at his brother’s loss to new WBA/WBO/IBF champion, Tyson Fury, insisting all decisions remain “up to Wladimir” with regards to his next move. However he may not want his limp, half hearted showing last night to be his last experience in the ring and might have one final performance in him.
There was a clause in the fight contract that gives Klitschko the option for an immediate rematch, so a sequel is likely. “In the mighty name of Jesus I thank you”. Fury found the opening rounds easy going and by the fourth those in attendance realized Klitschko simply wasn’t aggressive enough to win the 12 rounds, and in current form would find a knockout blow impossible to land.
Fury once dressed as Batman and engaged in a wrestle with a man dressed as The Joker for a press conference stunt. I just could not find the right distance. In doing so Fury gains the International Boxing Federation, International Boxing Organization, World Boxing Association, and World Boxing Organization heavyweight titles.
One factor that helped Fury was his height and reach advantage over the Ukrainian champ, something only one of Klitschko’s previous opponents could boast.
“When I got with Peter in early 2012, I was going to stop boxing back then”, he said.
It was the first time Klitschko lost since April 2004, snapping a 22-fight winning streak.
The new champion celebrated his victory by singing Aerosmith’s “Don’t Want to Miss a Thing” in the ring.
Klitschko, 39, finished with cuts to both cheeks while Fury was unmarked.
“By the power of Jesus I won this in Germany tonight”, Fury said. “If you say I’m fighting in Japan, Turkey, Azerbaijan, America, wherever it has to be, it has to be”, Fury said. “I’m not interested in them”, said Fury. That ended Klitschko’s reign as world champion after nine years, six months.
Aside from the showboating which some will argue was unnecessary, Fury’s movement, quickness and sharpness were all too much for his rival as he made himself elusive while leading with the jab and landing the telling power shots. Klitschko landed a ferocious right hand again but Fury shook it off well as the fight finally caught fire.
