Dog named “Trigger” shoots owner in foot during hunting trip
An Avilla woman was getting ready to reposition herself during a waterfowl hunt at Tri-County Fish and Wildlife Area on Saturday when she laid down her loaded 12 gauge shotgun on the ground at her feet.
The 11-year-old chocolate Labrador depressed the trigger with his paw which fired the gun into his owner’s foot, Indiana Conservation Officer Jonathon Boyd said.
He says Carter was shot in the left foot at point-blank range, suffering injuries to her foot and toes from the bird shot pellets.
According to WANE, Carter had not completed a hunting safety course before laying down her shotgun without securing it. The AP reports she was treated and released. They said the muzzle of a firearm should always be pointed in a safe direction, using the safety mechanism.
The state also requires hunters born after December 31, 1986, to take a certified hunter education course before purchasing a hunting license.
On Saturday morning, Indiana Conservation Officers were called to help a person who had been shot while hunting.
Carter could not be reached for comment.
