Dog poo crusader is Hugh Grant’s hero
Hawes has a number of supporters, but there are some against his methods like a BBC Suffolk Facebook commenter who wrote, “Whilst he may have good intentions, he may cause harassment, alarm and distress if challenging people dressed like this and “peeping” on them, especially women or children walking their dogs”.
Andrew Hawes, 43, decided to take action after he and fellow residents cleaned up their area in Leiston only for the mess to return within a week.
Mr Hawes said he would pass the details to police once offenders are identified.
“If I have to go to court to explain my actions, if it’s saving a child from getting dog mess in their eye and going blind through disease, so be it”, Hawes said. He has set up a Facebook page entitled Leiston Dog Mess Name and Shame, which has 650 members as of today.
Mr Hawes, who works as a HGV driver when he is not hiding in bushes, said he was not concerned about his own safety.
Mr Hawes says he will then jump out and threaten to expose the offenders unless they clear up after their dogs.
“If they don’t clear up after their dog I’ll pop out of the hedge and say, “excuse me, could you please clean up after your dog?”
On his Facebook page he posted: “Bin your poo, I’m watching you!”
His campaign has been so well received that he has even talked about creating a 2016 calendar, based around the theme of clearing up dog mess.
“My camouflage is so good, they won’t see me”.
Claire Hargrave commented on his camouflage: “He does know that green and beige are different colours, right?”
