Dolphin seen swimming in South River in Old Bridge dies
The Marine Mammal in South River (MMSC) wowed spectators in Old Bridge, New Jersey, for almost 24 hours and it was for the first time that the dolphin was caught on video.
A wayward dolphin seen swimming in a New Jersey river last week has died.
Three people were hospitalized after two cars collided on a southern New Jersey roadway. “Thank you to all who have followed and supported our efforts”, the Marine Mammal Stranding Center said in the report.
When the animal remained in the river for another day, members of the local group called Raritan Riverkeeper were sent to go into the water along with a baykeeper watercraft in order to gently lead it down the South River. The river was located roughly ten miles from the ocean. The dolphin made an appearance above water every 1 1/2 to 2 minutes.
The dolphin was older and weighed about 400 pounds, but was “terribly emaciated”, the statement said. Rescue workers tried, and failed, to shoo the dolphin toward the ocean on Thursday, August 6, 2015.
Teams with the Brigantine-based Marine Mammal Stranding Center initially tried using a boat to coax it toward the Raritan Bay, and the dolphin appeared to finally be doing that Saturday morning. It was taken to a pathologist for a necropsy to determine a cause of death.
