Dolphins fire D-coordinator Kevin Coyle, name Lou Anarumo replacement
Last week, in the days before Miami lost to the New York Jets in London, Dolphins defensive players reportedly held a meeting with Coyle, frustrated by his schemes. Coyle also was a coach with the Cincinnati Bengals for a decade before joining Miami.
Kevin Coyle, the embattled Dolphins defensive coordinator whose unit has under-achieved as pass rushers and been trampled as run defenders, has been fired, according to a National Football League source. It’s a move that has been expected for days, with the Dolphins’ offseason spending spree on defensive plays failing to pan out for the 1-3 team. Anarumo had previously worked with Joe Philbin while they were coaches and Harvard, and Anarumo has been the Dolphins defensive backs coach since 2012.
On Wednesday, Campbell indicated that he hadn’t made up his mind about Coyle, with the team on its bye this week.
Coyle will be succeeded by Dolphins defensive backs coach Lou Anarumo, who is in his fourth season with the team.
Assistant coach Blue Adams will continue to work with the safeties.
After firing Joe Philbin earlier in the week, new coach Dan Campbell and the front office have continued to make adjustments to the staff. Coyle was seen as a likely target to be replaced due to a lackluster defensive effort this season.
