Dominant Hamilton takes pole for Italian Grand Prix
It seemed like Lewis Hamilton would be registering yet another victory at Monza today, but a faltering start on the opening lap ensured that Nico Rosberg dominated the race securing the pole position in the Italian Grand Prix.
Rosberg’s countryman Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari will start third, followed by his teammate Kimi Raikkonen.
Hamilton joined F1 greats Juan Manuel Fangio and Ayrton Senna with a record five poles at Monza. It is also the German driver’s 21st career win.
“This is the best podium in the world. we are working very hard, they are doing a very good job, so you have to say well done”, he said.
Vettel however, was still almost one second slower than Hamilton with Mercedes, who have won all but one of the 13 grands prix so far this season, arguably further ahead here than they have been at any stage this season.
Hamilton, who effectively lost the race in the first 20m when the lights went out, now leads the title race with 250 points ahead of Rosberg on 248.
The world championship leader claimed one place back with a smart overtake on the outside into Turn 1 to pass the Red Bull of Daniel Ricciardo on lap two. Force India’s Sergio Perez and Nico Hulkenberg will start from eighth and ninth position, and gather as many points as possible from the Italian Grand Prix.

The leader of the pack came up with a dominant time of 1:21.135s which left four-time champion Vettel anxious and awestruck at the same time. Torro Rosso driver Daniil Kvyat had to retire as well due to a technical issue, while Pascal Wehrlein was asked to stop the auto at Lap 28 and switch off, ending his run.
