Dominika Cibulkova forced to postpone wedding after beating Agnieszka Radwanska
Dominika Cibulkova, Lucie Safarova and Madison Keys also reached last 16.
Cilic, who will next face either Roger Federer or Steve Johnson in the quarterfinals, won the 2014 U.S. Open title by beating Nishikori in the final.
“I felt I was really dialled in so good today”, said Serena, who was greatly encouraged by the win of her sister. Because nothing better could happen to me in my tennis career than playing in a Wimbledon final.
Now both players were in first gear, going to toe-to-toe and more particularly backhand-to-backhand, with one fizzing cross-court exchange drawing gasps from the crowd.
Cibulkova defeated Poland’s Radwanska en route to her first grass-court title at Eastbourne last month and emulated that result with a surprise 6-3, 5-7, 9-7 fourth round victory to secure her first Wimbledon quarter-final berth since 2011.
While Bouchard has lost form, coaches and confidence, her ranking dropping from seven to 48, Konta has surged from 150 to 19, via the fourth round at the US Open and an Australian Open semi-final.
“Here we are, I won Eastbourne and now I’m in the fourth round here and it feels great”.
The 27-year-old world number 18 from Bratislava gambled on the wedding date, believing it was improbable she would be in the frame for a Wimbledon final appearance. “And most importantly, we’ve worked a lot on mental exercises, which I feel has been helping me”. On the last occasion, however, there was no way back for Radwanska, despite a final moment of great drama. Radwanska found herself on the losing end of a three-set match against Dominicka Cibulkova.
The Slovak received a warning for slow play because, she said, she was so exhausted between points that she needed extra seconds to prepare her serve. “It’s always disappointing, especially after three hours when you are really exhausted and angry, when you lose a match that could have gone either way”. Vandeweghe could not get her serve working, landing just 49 per cent of first deliveries in court.
“I think for me, it doesn’t really matter right now”, said Radwanska.
“It was a very tough call”, Cibulkova said later. I was just fighting for every single ball. It takes so much energy and it’s even tougher mentally.
