Don Brown hired as Michigan defensive coordinator
Brown will run a Wolverines’ defense that allowed 17 points per game this season.
Brown reportedly takes over with the Wolverines for D.J. Durkin, who left to take over the Maryland head coaching job vacated by Randy Edsall. They also ranked No. 2 in rushing defense, No. 4 in scoring defense, No. 8 in passing yards allowed and No. 9 in pass efficiency defense.
According to Harbaugh, the search for the new coordinator included talking with his father Jack, brother John, as well as Bill Belichick Bob Sutton and Vic Fangio. “Everything he has touched has turned to gold”, Harbaugh said in a statement released Monday.
On Oct. 10, Brown’s defense allowed on three points to Wake Forest – and lost 3-0.
Brown worked wonders at Boston College, especially in 2015, when the Golden Eagles finished first in total defense and fourth in total scoring.
He has coached 34 years, 19 as a defensive coordinator. “We are beyond excited to welcome this high character, high achieving individual to our program and university”. U-M’s defensive line coach Greg Mattison is running the defense for the upcoming January 1 Citrus Bowl against Florida.
His defenses begin with blitzing. The key words are “at the moment” and there is still enough time in the offseason for Boston College to find a worthy successor and get some much-needed momentum heading into the new year. “You have to love him because that’s who he is”.
“BC has a great defense”, Clawson said.
Previous stints include serving as defensive coordinator for CT and Maryland, and coach at Plymouth State, Northeastern and MA. Brown also coordinated defenses at Mansfield (1983), Dartmouth (1984-86), Yale (1987-92), Brown (1996-97) and MA (1998-99).
