Donald Trump accepts Republican presidential nomination
“We can not afford to be so politically correct anymore”.
There were no fireworks or unexpected twists – a day after Texas Sen.
Ivanka Trump, the polished, careful daughter of a shoot-from-the-hip presidential candidate, made a personal appeal to female voters who remain skeptical of a Trump presidency, describing her father “as a fighter” for the nation and women. “This is the legacy of Hillary Clinton: death, destruction, terrorism and weakness”, Trump said.
Each pause in her speech was greeted by rapturous applause and chants of ‘Trump!
“I am certain that it was a decision that President Obama truly regrets”.
“I always heard he didn’t have that many friends in Washington D.C. He certainly didn’t have that many friends in this room last night”, Trump’s son Eric told NBC’s Today show.
Party leaders had sought a smoothly-run convention that would unify around the unorthodox White House candidate and present him as a strong leader capable of taking on challenges from the security threat of ISIS to wage stagnation in the United States. “We will not accept the current state of our country because it’s too hard to change”.
The billionaire businessman blamed the Obama administration’s “rollback of criminal enforcement” on the country’s homicide figures, while singling out Chicago’s murder tally. It followed the Monday night speeches of family members of those killed by illegal immigrants.
“Nearly 180,000 illegal immigrants with criminal records, ordered deported from our country, are tonight roaming free to threaten peaceful citizens”.
As Trump wrapped up his convention, Clinton was closing in on her selection of a running mate.
“My opponent asks her supporters to recite a three-word loyalty pledge. My message is that things have to change – and they have to change right now”, Trump said.
“I am not in the habit of supporting people who attack my wife and attack my father”, Cruz told a meeting of the Texas delegation in Cleveland.
“I am your voice”, Trump said.
“I’m with you, I will fight for you, and I will win for you”, he continued.
As he portrayed himself as in step with the average American, Trump did not shy away from his own status as a longtime insider. “Which is why I alone can fix it”.
Trump has embarked on one of the more remarkable US presidential campaigns in modern history, capturing the nomination of one of the two major parties while denouncing what he calls a “rigged political system”.
Formally accepting his party’s nomination, Trump delivered an unusually disciplined speech that promised to keep Americans safe from threats overseas and at home, and assailed Democratic rival Hillary Clinton as part of a political insider class. Trump did not mention Cruz, who dropped out of the race after he lost to Trump in the in primary, paving the way for Trump to claim the nomination.
“Americanism, not globalism, will be our credo”, he said. “And we will make America great again”.
“Ivanka 2024” posters have even sprung up, with some calling the former model a possible candidate for future office.
The gold podium was brought out to the stage before Ivanka Trump walked out to “Here Comes the Sun” by The Beatles to introduce her father. She painted a picture of an empathetic man – and made it clear she doesn’t think the country knows the real Donald Trump yet: “If it’s possible to be famous and yet not really well known, that describes the father who raised me”. “As president, my father will change the labor laws”, she said, suggested he’d make “child care affordable and accessible for all” and provide support for working mothers. “A Trump presidency would be risky for the nation and the world”.
“We have terrorists coming over our border, infiltrating our community and causing massive destruction and mayhem”, Arpaio said. Trump said Cruz had “ruined his political career”.
Ivanka had the privilege of introducing her father, whom she called “the people’s nominee” prior to his speech.
