Donald Trump Aide Steps Up Bid To Block Possible Mitt Romney Nomination
But if Donald Trump might be willing to grant Mitt forgiveness, his supporters certainly are not giving ground.
The former campaign manager joined a number of Trump confidantes who have taken to the airwaves with their arguments against Romney.
“If we, Republicans, choose Donald Trump as our nominee, the prospects for a safe and prosperous future are greatly diminished”, he said in a March speech in Utah. In a November 19 meeting at Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster, N.J., Romney said he and Trump had a ” far-reaching conversation”.
“It went great”, Trump said of the same meeting. Others whose names are in the mix for secretary of state are Sen.
The day after that meeting, Conway simply described both men as accomplished job creators.
Conway said she had received a “deluge” of concern from people who questioned the loyalty of Romney, a former MA governor who assailed Trump as a “phony” during the presidential campaign. “Whatever he decides will have my full support and respect, and he knows that”. The extraordinary public nature of the effort has also stirred speculation that it could be a Trump-approved attempt to humiliate a prominent Republican who staunchly opposed him throughout the presidential campaign. She said Romney was “nothing but awful” to Trump for a year. “So I think there are concerns that those of us who are loyal have and you want somebody – you want a secretary of state who is loyal to the president and loyal to the president’s vision of the world”. She continued, “It’s just the backlash from the grassroots”.
Newt Gingrich, another adviser and supporter of Trump, said Sunday that Trump supporters would be “enormously disappointed” if Romney is nominated to be secretary of State.
Trump isn’t the kind to let an insult go, and his incredibly thin skin meant that we were all aware of just how upset Romney’s comments made the PEOTUS.
Now, Mr. Romney seems open to serving as Mr. Trump’s secretary of state.
Conway, now a senior adviser to President-elect Trump, labeling Team Hillary “a pack of sore losers” in a statement to Bloomberg Politics.
“I would hope so”, she said. During the campaign, Trump pledged to reverse President Obama’s executive actions on Cuba, which have among other things allowed direct flights between the two countries and lifted restrictions on rum and cigar imports.
Ana Navarro, a Republican Trump critic and CNN political commentator, registered her surprise at the interview on Twitter, saying: “Astounding to hear K. Conway, who has the ability to tell Trump privately, trash possibility of Romney as Sec of State publicly on @CNNSotu”.
But expertise or previous experience doesn’t seem to be much of a qualification in the eyes of the president-elect, whose pick for ambassador to the UN, Indian American Nikki Haley, has nothing on her resume to back her up.
Sunday was not the first time Conway criticized Romney.
