Donald Trump aims to reset presidency in his first Congressional speech
U.S. President Donald Trump arrives to deliver an address to a joint session of the U.S. Congress on February 28, 2017 in the House chamber of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, United States. As a speech, it worked well enough, but he barely outlined a legislative agenda and most of the few specific things he did propose are likely to run into stiff resistance in Congress. Barack Obama addressed Congress after they just passed a large stimulus package in the middle of the Great Recession. “A new national pride is sweeping across our nation, and a new surge of optimism is placing impossible dreams firmly within our grasp”.
“The president is not going to say what I want him to say”, Ms. Waters reportedly told House Democrats of her reasoning of boycotting the event.
“If we are guided by the well-being of American citizens then I believe Republicans and Democrats can work together to achieve an outcome that has eluded our country for decades”, he said.
The US President said he is going to bring back millions of jobs. There was nothing in the foreign policy sections of the speech that a previous Republican president wouldn’t have said or hasn’t already said. On the same day in January that the president signed another memorandum reviving the Keystone XL pipeline project, he said another memorandum instructing his commerce secretary to devise a plan to ensure pipeline companies use US steel.
“Absolutely, I think he did endorse the path that we are taking in the House”, echoed North Carolina Rep. Virginia Foxx.
It will be his first address to Congress since being he was sworn in January 20 as the nation’s 45th president, and his first speech to the nation since his inaugural address.
Growing signs of division within the Republican ranks this week over Obamacare appeared to be put to one side on Tuesday night as the Republican representatives gave their president a rousing welcome.
“We want all Americans to succeed, but that can’t happen in an environment of lawless chaos”, Trump said. While Trump is not a great orator, he spoke for an hour with confidence and a polish for one who didn’t spend years delivering political speeches. The to-do list is extensive, and it includes campaign promises such as repealing the Affordable Care Act, investing in infrastructure, rewriting the nation’s tax code and building a wall along the USA border with Mexico.
Some will watch what tone Trump uses in his speech.
Since the surprise election of President Trump in November, left-wing agitators and disappointed Democrats have engaged in raucous protests and riotous actions in various cities across the country. “Every policy description has been encapsulated in a single adjective…there’s been very little in the way of true detail”, said Tom Siomades, head of Hartford Funds Investment Consulting Group.
Trump showed Tuesday that the traditions designed for decades to make the president look good can also make Trump look good.
He is expected to discuss his plan to increase military spending by almost 10 percent, or $54 billion, offset by equal cuts in non-defense spending. The proposal also leaves entitlements, which GOP lawmakers have eyed for years, untouched. “We’re not there yet”, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell told reporters.
