Donald Trump attacks Amazon’s Bezos on tax ‘screw’
Sort of like how Trump claims to have “never gone bankrupt”, and has simply “taken advantage of the laws of this country”.
The Post’s fact checker column concluded on Monday that “just about every word uttered by Trump needs to be taken with a grain of salt” and awarded him “Four Pinocchios”.
If Trump really wanted to attack Bezos and Amazon, he should have called out Amazon for employing tax dodges that routed its European profits through a country known for being a low-tax haven. Bezos does. So it’s not clear at all how Amazon can use the paper’s losses as an excuse to pay lower taxes.
His tweet brought attention to a video released last month from his Blue Origin space company of a rocket successfully touching down in west Texas.
Trump, who often goes after media companies themselves in their coverage of his 2016 White House bid, also shared a tweet on Monday afternoon declaring, “The Post doesn’t get that I’m good at winning!”
“It doesn’t make any sense”, said Martin Sullivan, chief economist with Tax Analysts.
This move was met with ridicule towards the Republican candidate, with many Twitter users joking on the fact that Donald Trump should spread his campaign to other planets. It had previously only been doing so in tiny Luxembourg.
Mr Bezos personally owns the Post and it has no direct impact on Amazon’s tax position, though Amazon Prime subscribers can access the newspaper for free.
Amazon isn’t the only big American company accused of dodging taxes overseas either.
Amazon had no comment about Trump’s allegations.
