Donald Trump attacks New York Times Oscars ad
The 30-second spot starts with a declaration on the screen: “The truth is our nation is more divided than ever”.
In an effort to brand itself as the antidote to a world where conflicting statements and “alternative facts” are flooding the airwaves and confusing people, the Times has opened up a water cannon of conflicting statements and alternative facts on the public.
The NRA’s video follows the same text-driven format.
“What does that mean in a world of “fake news”?” he said, according to CNN.
“Wasn’t it important when people were marching?” the video asks, before flashing scenes from old Tea Party protests.
But no news media organization has drawn the president’s ire like the Times.
A marketing push makes sense for the Times, as the paper has enjoyed a surge in subscriptions following the election.
“I call them the failing New York Times, and they write lies”, Trump told Breitbart.
The executive editor of the New York Times, Dean Baquet, went on CNN’s show Reliable Sources on Sunday morning to speak about his publication’s future in an era of Donald Trump, and things got interesting VERY quickly.
But Trump had a few good words for one member of the media in particular.
The clip, also posted on the Times’ official YouTube page, has more than 1.5 million views since it premiered Thursday.
On the decision to air the ad during the Oscars ceremony, Mr Rubin said the newspaper wanted an effective “high profile media moment”.
But the president fired back.
“And I’m not saying that President Trump is trying to be a dictator”.
Trump pointed to a New York Times story from last May in which the paper – after interviewing some 50 women – reported that Trump had made unwelcome sexual advances or sought to shame them by critiquing their appearances. On Friday, the White House barred several news outlets, including the Times, from attending an off-camera briefing with the press secretary, earning widespread condemnation and a boycott by some outlets who were allowed in the briefing.
