Donald Trump continues Twitter tirade, targets Hillary Clinton over recount effort
President-elect Donald Trump says it’s “sad” that Hillary Clinton is joining an effort to force vote recounts in up to three states.
President-elect Donald Trump asserted on Sunday (Nov 27) that he would have won the USA popular vote were it not for “millions of illegal” ballots, while dramatically sharpening his criticism of a recount in Wisconsin, calling it “a waste of time”.
The Wisconsin recount was initiated by Green Party candidate Jill Stein, who has raised $5 million towards that goal.
Stein’s campaign last Wednesday launched a fundraising effort to finance vote recounts in Wisconsin, Pennsylvania and MI, all of which Trump apparently won by narrow margins.
On Saturday, a day after Wisconsin officials said they would conduct the first presidential recount in the state’s history, Clinton campaign attorney Marc Elias said: “We intend to participate in order to ensure the process proceeds in a manner that is fair to all sides”. The essay states that while the Clinton team would never have filed a recount themselves, the fact that Stein raised enough money from donations from voters was enough to nudge them into participating.
Sanders, meanwhile, hewed close to the line that Clinton’s former campaign has walked on a recount effort being led by former Green Party candidate Jill Stein. Not stopping there, the president-elect continued his attack by using Clinton’s previous debate quote about accepting the results of the election. Clinton would have to win the recounts in both states and Wisconsin to overturn the election results.
If Stein raises $2.5 million, then she plans to file for recounts in MI and Pennsylvania.
The recount campaign is being headed by the Green Party’s presidential candidate Jill Stein.
He also suggested he would support a change to the nation’s electoral college system, which allowed Trump to win the presidency despite lagging in the popular vote.
Hillary Clinton may have rained down criticism on president-elect Donald Trump when, during the campaign, he capriciously assured he would not accept the results if he lost.
Trump’s reaction to the recount and threat to prosecute Hillary Clinton is not normal, and a sign that the incoming administration has an expansive and authoritarian view of executive powers that could represent a grave danger to the civil liberties and freedoms of the American people.
The result sparked anger among thousands of Clinton supporters who staged mass protests across the country and called for recounts.
Clinton’s lead in the popular vote has grown to over 2 million.
Stein and the Green Party have announced plans to request recounts in MI and Pennsylvania, as well.
Appearing on CNN, Stein dismissed Trump’s suggestion that the funds wouldn’t be spent on the recount.
But if a recount isn’t likely to alter the election’s outcome why are so many people willing to spend their money on one?
Earlier this week, speculation that electronic voting may have been tampered with in key states stoked new calls from Clinton backers for her to contest the election results.
