Donald Trump Defends Second Amendment In Position Paper, Calls For National
It’s just common sense.
“To make America great again, we need a strong military”.
In his position paper, Mr. Trump advocates for national concealed carry. “This is about self-defense, plain and simple”. Currently, there is no federal law addressing this – though all 50 states allow concealed carry with some type of permit, each permit has different terms, and is only enforceable in the state in which it was given.
A few parts of Trump’s statement focus on concealed carry, or the right for gun owners to walk around in public with their weapons hidden.
Carry for troops at military bases and recruiting centers. We train our military how to safely and responsibly use firearms, but our current policies leave them defenseless.
“To have a strong military, we need to allow them to defend themselves”, he added. “We can’t allow that to continue”.
Four Republican senators running for president – Marco Rubio of Florida, Rand Paul of Kentucky, Ted Cruz of Texas and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina – all voted to block a bill that would expand background checks after the 2012 elementary school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.
Trump’s plan embraces “Project Exile”, the Virginia program that severely punished felons who commit gun crimes. Unfortunately, that isn’t the case today.
Government should have no say in what sort of guns citizens may own.
Trump called magazine and assault rifle bans a “total failure”, said America “shouldn’t expand a broken” background check system, and came out in favor of letting everyone have concealed weapons. That’s been proven every time it’s been tried. “The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed upon – period”. Prosecute violent offenders relentlessly. The man also complained of Muslim “training camps” and asked “When can we get rid of them?” Drug dealers and gang members are given a slap on the wrist and turned loose on the street. It asserts, “All of the tragic mass murders that occurred in the past several years have something in common – there were red flags that were ignored”.
“Our personal protection is ultimately up to us”, Trump said.
The real estate magnate called for expanding mental health treatment, saying that people with mental health issues who are violent must be off the street “before they can terrorize our communities”. “This is just common sense”.
“I generally oppose gun control, but I support the ban on assault weapons and I also support a slightly longer waiting period to purchase a gun”, he said.
Well, now at least The Donald can say he doubled his policy positions in one fell swoop with a Friday afternoon update to his campaign website.
Many state and federal lawmakers have responded by calling for tighter gun control measures.
National reciprocity is going to a be very easy sell to most gun owners.
Trump’s first policy paper, unveiled last month, enshrined the far-right anti-immigration platform that has fueled his campaign so far, which includes the proposal to construct a wall along the border with Mexico and enact mass deportations of the 11 million undocumented migrants now in the country.
