Donald Trump Envisions Life As President On SNL
“How do you spell racist?”
Candidate Donald Trump on Saturday satirized his imaginary presidency with a Washington Monument covered in gold mirrors and policy agenda made of magic in his turn as host of comedy show “Saturday Night Live”.
“That’s going to look so elegant”, Trump said. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) in a spoof of Friday’s MSNBC forum for the Democratic presidential candidates.
One “protester” inside – Larry David – jokingly heckled Trump during his opening monologue: “Trump’s a racist”, he yelled. “What are you doing, Larry?” She wore a Trump signature red “Make America Great Again” hat and said she planned to watch the show later with her family.
“As a businessman”, Trump told him, “I can fully respect that”.
Trump’s comments last summer spurred NBC to sever its Miss Universe ties with him while declaring he would never return to his The Apprentice role.
He previously hosted SNL in 2004 when he was still at the helm of “The Apprentice”.
While the TV ratings for Trump on “SNL” were big, the reaction to Trump’s performance was lukewarm with a few critics saying that Trump didn’t live up to the hype. Trump supporters can fob off their disappointment in the quality of the show on cast and writers, but only the most blinkered could deny that the candidate came off as stilted, bland, and unprepared in the very little screen time he was given. When Leslie Jones does her usual schtick of comically lusting after Colin Jost (a “tall glass of egg whites” tonight), and relating her romantic troubles, it succeeds as a brash, personal expression of Jones’ “I don’t care what you think of me” comic persona. NBC faced mounting pressure from a coalition of advocacy groups calling for him to be dropped from SNL for what one spokesman termed his “racist demagoguery”.
SNL airs on Saturdays’ at 11:30/10:30c on NBC.
In his monologue, Mr Trump promised his appearance would be “something special”, while noting that many people had asked him why he accepted the gig. “Due to the recent derogatory statements by Donald Trump regarding immigrants, NBCUniversal is ending its business relationship with Mr. Trump”. NBC announced Arnold Schwarzenegger would be replacing him next season.
This time, “SNL” will serve as a campaign stop on Trump’s drive for the Republican presidential nomination.
“It’s 2016, and Trump needs to hear that you can’t win the White House without the brown vote”.
NBC has not responded to the outcry, and Trump’s 90 minutes in the “SNL” spotlight seemed certain. Full results, including viewership figures, will be released Thursday, NBC said.
