Donald Trump Hits Highest Support & Widest Lead Still, New Poll Shows
The GOP nomination horserace question in this poll followed several questions about illegal immigration and mass deportation, both staples of Donald Trump’s campaign.
Presidential candidate Donald Trump isn’t afraid to insult people but on Thursday he found a new group to add to his hit-list: Republican Jewish voters.
Mr. Bush the younger, once seen as a front runner with the fund raising wherewithal to carry him to a GOP nomination next Summer, is in free fall, with just 3% of the Republican electorate supporting him. In the meantime, Ted Cruz, focusing his efforts on the first-in-the-nation caucus state of Iowa, has climbed 12 points. Jeb Bush, the former governor of Florida, only got six percent and it marks his lowest voting percentage since the start of the presidential poll two years ago. Rand Paul of Kentucky’s support fell by 4 points, to 1 percent.
Last month, Trump had 24 per cent, with 23 per cent for Carson. But Carson’s support tumbled amid questions about his knowledge of foreign policy and a renewed focus on national-security issues. The poll also reflects the dominance Trump enjoys over others in the field on issues that voters deem to be of uppermost importance to them.
Several other recent polls have shown Trump reclaiming a solid lead atop the Republican field after several weeks of near parity with Carson, CNN noted. Among those without college degrees, Trump holds a runaway lead: 46% support the businessman, compared with 12% for Cruz, 11% for Carson and just 8% for Rubio.
More generally, about 4 in 10 Republicans say Trump is the candidate who would be most effective at solving the country’s problems and could best handle the responsibilities of being commander-in-chief. In an article with Mint Press News, Republican political consultant Nathan Wurtzel (who is Jewish) pointed out that “there are a lot of folks who are, to be charitable, into white identity politics, and to be uncharitable are outright racists, who are supporting Trump”.
The poll included 445 Republican or Republican-leaning voters, and was conducted November 27-Dec. 1.
