Donald Trump in fresh feud with TV anchor
In an incident that’s gotten widespread attention, Ramos, a Univision anchor, was ejected Tuesday from a Trump news conference before a rally in Dubuque, Iowa.
Trump complained Wednesday on NBC’s “Today” show that Ramos had been “totally, absolutely out of line” and “ranting and raving like a madman”.
Introducing correspondent Tom Llamas’ report on the “feud,” ABC’s World News Tonight fill-in anchor George Stephanopoulos explained that Trump’s “face-off” with “the Latino Walter Cronkite…came in a rollicking news conference” as Ramos “repeatedly trie[d] to question Trump” before being tossed out (and then allowed back).
When he was allowed back in the Tuesday event, Ramos asked Trump about his immigration platform.
NEW YORK (AP) Donald Trump’s onscreen confrontation with Univision’s Jorge Ramos on Tuesday over the Republican presidential candidate’s immigration plan should only be a surprise to those who don’t know Ramos.
“Univision said they don’t like Trump yet Jorge Ramos and their other anchors are begging me for interviews”.
After Trump had answered two or three questions from other reporters, Ramos, seated in the front row, rose and stood silently for a moment.
It was the latest salvo in Trump’s conflict with Univision, which began when the network cancelled its contract to broadcast his Miss Universe Organization pageants. Network owner Haim Saban publicly backs Hillary Clinton; Univision has partnered with the Bill, Hillary & Chelsea Clinton Foundation, and Ramos revealed in June that his daughter took a job with Hillary Clinton’s campaign.
After Ramos maintained that building a border fence is a waste of money, and discussed Trump’s numbers among Hispanics, Kelly said that while Gallup’s polling shows Trump has a high disapproval rating among Hispanics, Trump gave Ramos an answer, but one that he disagreed with. “I don’t know really much about him“.
“I think the best journalism happens when you take a stand”, Ramos said. Instead, Trump entertained a back and forth with Ramos for nearly five minutes, and even hinted at a possible sit-down interview in the future.
According to Fusion’s Facebook page, Ramos will sit down with Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly Wednesday night to talk about being bullied by Trump. “You saw that, right?” he asked.
After Ramos was kicked out, Trump said he held no ill-will toward the reporter but just wanted him to conform to the rules. “I’m sure he looked like a bully to Ramos’ audience”. We’re talking about destroying the lives of millions of people if his plan goes ahead. “I think that’s a good idea”. Trump asked. “They’re going to be out so fast your head is going to spin”.
