Donald Trump is loving this lawsuit over Ted Cruz’s citizenship
Cruz wrapped up the exchange by noting how he was glad to hear in Trump’s response that he’d consider him as his running mate. And there was no issue there. There was nothing to this “birther” issue. Now, since September, the Constitution hasn’t changed.
“Don’t listen to the words on the campaign trail”, Cruz said.
“But the facts and the law here are really quite clear”. The court is being asked to settle whether Cruz, a Republican senator from Texas, meets the “natural born citizen” requirement in the Constitution. “Natural born citizen” has never been defined”. He added, “No wonder the banks do so well in the U.S. Senate”. “Under that theory, not only would I be disqualified, Marco Rubio would be disqualified, Bobby Jindal would be disqualified, an interestingly enough, Donald J. Trump would be disqualified”. Cruz’s mother, Eleanor Darragh, was born in DE, lived most of her life in the United States, and gave birth to little Rafael Edward Cruz in her 30s.
“Because it wouldn’t work”, Trump responded.
“You know, I think most people know exactly what NY values are”, Cruz said.
Trump was given an opportunity for a rebuttal, and started out with the poll numbers.
Cruz then listed off seven fights he had led, describing each as a “time for choosing”, a reference to Ronald Reagan’s iconic 1964 speech: fighting for gun rights, traditional marriage, defunding Planned Parenthood, fighting against Obamacare, a nuclear Iran, “amnesty” for undocumented immigrants, and government intervention for Wall Street and other favored industries.
Appearing in an extended interview on MSNBC’s Morning Joe from Des Moines, Iowa, Trump said Cruz “hurt himself” in Thursday’s debate with his sweeping remarks about the political ideologies of New Yorkers. So you shouldn’t misrepresent how well you’re doing with the polls.
“Have you consistently stood for the principles you say you stood for?” I would note that Donald’s record does not match what he says as a candidate.
The latest disclosure casts further doubt on his oft-stated story of having liquidated his entire family savings of slightly more than $1 million to fuel a come-from-behind win in the Republican primary.
Schwartz said he filed the lawsuit because no one else has done it.
Trump and Cruz got into a lengthy back and forth on the eligibility issue at Thursday’s presidential debate in SC. Asked how he knows, McCarthy said: “Because his mother’s an American”.
“You have a big lawsuit over your head”, Trump said. “And if you become the nominee, who the hell knows if you can even serve in office?”
The case is Schwartz v. Cruz, 4:16-cv-00106, U.S. District Court, Southern District of Texas (Houston). And I’ll tell you, I’m not going to be taking legal advice from Donald Trump. “He’s got probably a 4 or 5% chance”, Trump said, breaking into a grin.
“And I’ll tell you what Donald”.
