Donald Trump leads Hillary Clinton in new national poll
In polling conducted after the Republican convention and Hillary Clinton’s announcement of Tim Kaine as her running mate, the race for president nationwide remains tied.
Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump is mean and we all know it. He proved it yet again during a campaign stop in Roanoke yesterday when he called Hillary Clinton ‘rotten’.
That is Trump’s best showing against Clinton in CNN’s poll since September. In the new poll, 85 percent of Republicans said they would vote for Trump, compared to 79 percent from the week before.
Trump celebrated the polls Monday morning. He said Trump didn’t win over persuadable voters, but simply shored up his base.
“What we hope to hear from both candidates is how they will fight our enemies while keeping America safe through strong national defense and homeland security programs”, he said. However, when I turned on CNN, they were already discussing the speech. Another 20 per cent think they need more information.
Along with Sen. Ted Cruz, who refused to endorse Trump from the stage, only the speech from Trump’s wife, Melania – in which the campaign lifted portions of Michelle Obama’s 2008 Democratic National Convention speech – received negative ratings.
Post-convention bounces are expected for a United States presidential candidate who has been in the media spotlight for a solid week.
The CNN/ORC poll suggests a large share of Republican voters still need to be won over. Further, 45 per cent continue to say they did prefer someone other than Trump as the nominee.
The poll included 2,502 registered voters from July 22-24 and carries a margin of error of 2 percentage points.
