Donald Trump: Marco Rubio “wants amnesty” because he is Hispanic
Part of Cruz’s hesitation to attack Rubio directly is keeping with his early campaign pledge that he would not attack fellow Republicans during the campaign.
Rubio is clearly looking to highlight such things to distract from Cruz’s attack on his support for Schum-o-bamnesty, which continues to raise suspicions among conservatives about Rubio’s true immigration intentions. Cruz answered that he doesn’t think increasing the number of legal immigrants and foreign workers is a good idea. Record is remarkably clear.
His comments mark the clearest signal yet of how Rubio will seek to frame his engagement in the failed 2013 immigration reform effort, which incensed many conservatives because of its inclusion of a path to citizenship. Bush himself, however, has spoken of identifying and deporting the many immigrants who have overstayed visas. “The two frontrunners on substance weren’t as strong as a few of the other people below them“, said Cruz spokesman Rick Tyler in the post-debate spin room. Mr. Cruz also noted that he had not called for deportation or, as Mitt Romney famously advocated, self-deportation. Florida Senator Marco Rubio is fourth in the new UT/Tribune poll. It recruits immigrants and their children – whom you want to import more of, by the way.
And a second point to those advocacy groups that are so passionately engaged. I live in a Hispanic community – majority immigrant community. “It would be very, very hard to believe that Matthews is unaware of a small coterie of activists who claim that neither candidate is eligible for the presidency because of the circumstances of their births, and it certainly appears as though Matthews is trying to troll that issue as a way to damage Rubio and Cruz”. But I thought Rubio was slightly better than Cruz last time, and that Cruz was slightly better this time.
Here is the press release for the amendment Cruz discussed above. So if you add up the years, it is a lot of years before someone who’s illegally here now could become a citizen. This Amendment prevents those now here illegally who are offered legal status under this Act from obtaining citizenship. He intentionally focused on citizenship only…
The Rubio camp responded with this recording from NPR on 6/20/13. Cruz said, “The 11 million who are here illegally would be granted legal status once the border was secured, not before, but after the border was secured, they would be granted legal status”. If Congress doesn’t address legal frameworks for people to migrate where the job market needs them, the problem won’t be solved.

Rubio is also right that Cruz has proposed expanding the H1-B visa program, but Cruz is now walking that back. “After 10 years on the work permit, I personally am open to – after the 10 years have expired – to allowing people to apply for a green card, just through the normal process that anyone else would use”. “He’s supported a massive expansion of the H-1B program – a 500% increase”.
Cruz is armed with the the most cash on hand of any Republican contender, with $13.8 million, according to the most recent fundraising reports, and several Cruz-aligned Super PACs have only just begun to tap their vast war chests. So this discussion doesn’t bother me.
INSKEEP: I think was a question, though… Nevertheless, I appreciate the back and forth. On top of that, Obama’s executive orders have further poisoned the well.
Translation: Sen. Cruz supported amnesty light; Sen.
The day after the two young, Cuban-American senators once again earned plaudits for their debate performances, the Texas Republican took his hardline message on immigration to New Hampshire, where he encouraged voters to look at which candidates are “blowing smoke” on a path to citizenship and which are “telling the truth”.
