Donald Trump mocks reporter’s disability
The NY Times is accusing Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump of ridiculing the physical handicap of a journalist, calling it “outrageous”.
The NY Times has said it was “outrageous” for Mr Trump to have ridiculed Mr Kovaleski’s appearance.
Trump waved his arms in an awkward manner to lampoon Serge Kovaleski at a rally in SC Tuesday night.
You ought to see the guy: ‘Err, I don’t know what I said.
“Trump seemed to be aware of this and referred to this quote at the rally, when he said mockingly of Kovaleski’s recollection of the story, “‘Oh, I don’t know what I said, ah, I don’t remember!’ He’s going, ‘Oh, I don’t remember.
“The sad part about it is, it didn’t in the slightest bit jar or surprise me that Donald Trump would do something this low-rent, given his track record”, Kovaleski told the Post.
Trump performed the imitation during a defense of his claim that he saw “thousands” of Muslims celebrating in New Jersey after 9/11.
Donald Trump has been widely condemned after mocking a reporter’s disability during a campaign speech.
However Kovaleski told the Post that he is confident that Trump remembers him and his condition.
Mr Kovaleski suffers from arthrogryposis, a congenital condition affecting how his joints move. Ah, I don’t remember what I said!
You can see Trump’s impression above, but be warned, it’s not easy to watch.
This claim has reportedly since been discredited by government and law officials who were in New Jersey in the days following the terrorist attack.
The NY Times, where Kovaleski is an investigative reporter and culture correspondent, on Wednesday released a statement to Politico, which first reported the incident.
Politico said that as Trump was speaking, he “launched into an impression which involved gyrating his arms wildly and imitating the unusual angle at which Kovaleski’s hand sometimes rests”. As a reporter at the NY Daily News in the late 1980s and early ’90s, he covered Trump’s business exploits and met with the developer on several occasions. In a July interview with NBC news, Trump lashed out at columnists Jonah Goldberg and Charles Krauthammer. “That was not the case, as best as I can remember”, Kovaleski told the Post.
