Donald Trump now open to taking some big contributions
“The hedge fund guys are getting away with murder”, Trump said. The real estate mogul said that if he were president he would change the tax code to force those who work for hedge funds to pay more.
“I don’t want lobbyists, I don’t want special interests”, he told host John Dickerson on CBS’s “Face the Nation”.
Democratic front-runner Hillary Clinton has also previously called for reforms, saying it was wrong that hedge fund managers “pay lower taxes than nurses” or truck drivers. In criticizing the tax that hedge fund managers pay, Trump was referring to what is known as the “carried interest loophole”.
Donald Trump has touted his independence from political donors lots of times (after all, he’s really rich), but now he’s starting to potentially warm up to the idea. “Look, they’re energetic. They’re very smart”. They have to pay taxes. I wanna save the middle class. You know the middle class, the hedge fund guys didn’t build this country. It’s ridiculous, OK? This – and some of them are friends of mine. “It’s the wrong thing”.
Trump then took aim at hedge funds, arguing that the investors involved with them are not properly regulated. “This country doesn’t have – won’t have a middle class very soon”.
A Reuters/Ipsos poll on Friday showed Trump with 32 percent of the support of Republicans, followed by former Florida Governor Jeb Bush with 16 percent, and Ben Carson with 8 percent.
First, a report from Politico this afternoon reveals that Trump met with big donors last month (before he publicly swiped at his Republican rivals for begging for Koch brothers money). And he actually became Republican who was fairly conservative. On Sunday he said he would accept donations, but only if there are “no strings attached”. “And he talked about he evolved as he got older”. And don’t forget, I – when you label me – I was never a politician.
