Donald Trump plans to force Apple to manufacture in the US
According to Gizmodo, Trump said in his speech: “We’re going to get Apple to build their damn computers in this country instead of other countries”. “We’re gonna get Apple to start building their damn computers and things in this country, instead of in other countries”.
Furthermore, Trump revealed that he was also in talks with other large American companies over their overseas production capacity, saying that he even “threatened” Ford CEO Mark Fields with a 35 percent tax if vehicle manufacturing wasn’t transferred to the United States. But he would have to champion laws that would fundamentally alter free trade to make it financially advantageous for Apple to upend its manufacturing and supply chain.
It’s no secret that Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump wants to see manufacturing return to the United States. “I guarantee you 100 per cent he [Ford’s President] will call back and say Mr President we’ve made a decision to build our plant in the United States”.
What the, what? Presidential candidate Donald J Trump has a plan to “make America great again”. He claimed that the U.S. had lost 10 million jobs and 50,000 manufacturing facilities as a result of such labor-outsourcing practices. Trump believes this trend is due to a failure in American leadership to properly negotiate with corporations.
“We need legislation that gives American companies the tax priorities and financial support to create more of their technology and redirect more of their manufacturing here at home”, he wrote in his campaign book, Crippled America.
As The Washington Post’s Hayley Tsukayama pointed out at the time, Obama echoed Apple co-founder Steve Jobs, who reportedly made the same argument to the president at a February 2011 dinner. Trump said people of this country had lots of qualities that make them awesome. “Free trade is good”. Apple isn’t alone in shifting production back to the US, Intel’s microprocessors are fabricated in the US while Tesla’s cars are built domestically as well.
“We have to do it. And that’s one of my real dreams for the country”, he said.
