Donald Trump projected to win Republican Nevada caucus
Donald Trump won Nevada’s Republican caucuses on Tuesday, as his main rivals battled for second place in an increasingly urgent effort to slam the brakes on Trump’s momentum.
Clinton was looking for a commanding victory over Sanders in Saturday’s SC primary to give her a boost heading into Super Tuesday.
“We love Nevada”, Trump told supporters at the Treasure Island casino on the Las Vegas Strip as he declared victory. “The sooner we can narrow the race down, the easier it’ll be to stop Donald Trump”.
Cruz in his concession speech said he looked forward to competing in 11 states, including his home state of Texas, on March 1, Super Tuesday, as a way of reviving his campaign.
Trump’s finish may have been most damaging for Cruz, who fired his top spokesman Monday for spreading a video that misrepresented comments Rubio made about the Bible.
The colourful tycoon recorded his third straight win in the race for the Republican nomination for president.
“I’m responding to Ted Cruz, that’s different, ” Rubio said.
The remaining two candidates for the Republican presidential nomination, retired neurosurgeon Ben Carson and Ohio Governor John Kasich, came in at about seven and four percent, respectively.
More than 10 states will hold primaries and caucuses that day. He not only won by what appears to be his biggest margin yet, he swept nearly every category of voters, including Latinos, CNN notes.
He came second in Iowa Caucus which was won by Ted Cruz.
After March 1, more than 700 delegates will have been awarded, almost one-third of the Republican total. “They want to get Cruz out and have Rubio go against Trump”. “Because we need change and we need Trump, we really do”, said one Caucus goer. Users on Twitter reported being turned away from the caucus site at a local school without having the chance to caucus, while others reported people voting multiple times or improper handling of ballots.
The results will be used to determine the number of Republican delegates who represent the state at the party’s nominating convention in July.
