Presumptive Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump has begun formally vetting prospective vice presidential picks.
Donald Trump’s vice presidential search is going on tour.
Trump has been conducting a relatively public vetting of vice presidential prospects.
Last week’s Ohio visit by Trump to the heart of the state’s coal country across the Ohio River from Wheeling represented a foray into territory where the presumptive GOP nominee could walk off with working class Democrats. Ted Cruz is that “he ain’t Donald Trump”.
“It’s unbelievable”, he said at a rally in Cincinnati, Ohio. He also criticized Ohio’s governor and former Trump opponent John Kasich for not endorsing the billionaire.
Sure, he’s run for president recently, but Gingrich hasn’t held elected office since 1999, when he resigned as Speaker of the House.
By picking 1999 politician Newt Gingrich, the Republican party will, in a sense, be moving itself almost 50 years into the future! “Newt was the epitome of the anti-establishment activist and he was ridiculed and laughed at by establishment figures in both parties on his way up the ladder”.
Gingrich has been a rare constant throughout the process, popping up consistently in most veep discussions since Trump clinched the Republican nomination.
In response, Gingrich offered his signature look: the dropping of his chin and a narrowed-eye glare, very Trump-like.
Known to friends as an insatiable reader with the intellectual appetite of a full-time historian, Gingrich pored through “Trump: The Art of the Deal”, the 1980s autobiography that details Trump’s lessons in business and real estate. “No, they love Newt, we all love Newt, Newt gets it”. “Because it’s remarkably revealing about Trump’s style and behavior and the way he thinks”. While officially just making a friendly trip with Trump to this swing state, it was also an audition for the No. 2 spot – a chance to showcase his wares and see for himself whether he fits comfortably within Trump’s orbit. “Newt is going to be involved”.

It will be the second day in a row that Trump will be joined by a traveling companion and possible running mate on the trail. “He’s a lot like Trump”.
A big part of Wednesday’s event involves Gingrich. Mr. Trump often appears that he could care less about nitty gritty policymaking and the need to compromise to get bills through Congress, preferring instead to make broad sweeping statements about how he would improve the nation’s economy and help he nation’s middle class. Mr. Gingrich, while in Congress, also went nose-to-nose against former President Clinton, so he knows how to fight against the Clinton political war machine to achieve welfare reform.
