Donald Trump says United States should consider profiling Muslims
Trump has been harshly criticized, even by some Republicans, for doubling down on his proposal to ban Muslim migration to the U.S.in the wake of last Sunday’s mass shooting at the gay nightclub Pulse in Orlando that left 49 people dead.
In a telephone interview with CBS’ “Face the Nation”, the presumptive Republican nominee said it was a “common-sense” approach already in use in other nations and one that should be considered here despite even his own reservations.
Other countries are racially profiling to great effect, Trump said- “Israel does it”, he continued, “successfully”.
Donald Trump said on Sunday he is open to racial profiling, touching another raw nerve on the issue of race in America. I hate the concept of profiling, but we have to use common sense.
“When you look at, when you look at people within the Muslim community and where people are living and they don’t report, and a good example of that would be San Bernardino”, he said. “In fact, in some instances they’re closing down mosques”, he said.
Trump’s comments come one week after 49 people were shot and killed in a gay nightclub in Orlando, the deadliest mass shooting in US history.
Police in France shut some mosques after Islamic State-aligned gunmen killed 130 people in Paris on 13 November. Following the massacre, Trump renewed his calls for a temporary ban on Muslims entering the US.
Trump says that in the age of global terrorism, it’s a matter of choosing “common sense” over “political correctness”.
“Increased surveillance, creating relationships with mosques in the Muslim-American community across the country – we did that after 9/11 and prevented attacks in New Jersey and all across the country”, Christie said.
Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren is tearing into Donald Trump, calling the presumptive Republican presidential nominee a “small, insecure money grubber” and “thin-skinned racist bully”.
