Donald Trump slams Nikki Haley for being ‘very weak’ on immigration
Obama, himself did not personally watch her address which was on Wednesday discussed by the mainstream American media throughout the day but was aware of Haley’s response to his last State of the Union Address, Earnest said.
Haley, a two-term governor in her mid-Atlantic coastal state, called for a more inclusive Republican party, saying it “must resist the temptation” to “follow the siren call of the angriest voices”.
Charles Bierbauer, former CNN correspondent and now dean of the University of South Carolina’s College of Mass Communications and Information Studies, says, “She’s selected to give her some visibility and to make the party look like it’s got some rising young stars”.
After sharing her tale as the daughter of immigrants, the nation’s second Indian American governor drew upon the example of unity following last year’s racially motivated mass shooting at a church in Charleston, South Carolina. “But I disagree with her politically and obviously she disagrees with me politically on immigration”, Trump said.
SC holds outsize influence over the Republican primary as the third early voting state, and at least one candidate praised Haley’s State of the Union response.
Governor Nikki Haley’s response to the President’s State of the Union address is getting mixed reviews from members of her own party.
“I feel very strongly about illegal immigration”. But now that I’m running she wants to take a weak shot on immigration.
Notably, Haley balked when she was asked if she thought Texas Sen.
Instead Haley says she hopes all candidates take away the meaning behind the remark. Haley’s speech also renewed speculation that she would be a strong pick as a vice-presidential candidate. If anyone doubts Donald Trump’s status as an utter outsider, or that the Republican Party is rattled by his high standing in the polls, the latest evidence is in the convergence of Tuesday’s speeches.
“Well, when you see Donald Trump, you might want to duck tomorrow night”, she playfully warned.
“Our state was struck with shock, pain and fear”, Haley said. “And that’s what I greatly appreciated”, she said.
“We will not win the presidency by telling people they’re wrong for being angry that middle class wages have declined under this president”, said.
She said that “while Democrats in Washington bear much responsibility for the problems facing America today, they do not bear it alone” and “we need to accept that we’ve played a role in how and why our government is broken”. Because over the years she’s asked me for a hell of a lot of money in campaign contributions.
Trump, by proclaiming his anger while also embracing Haley, appeared to bridge the gap – between the rage that animates his candidacy and the more positive approach that Republicans know they must use to attract a wider swath of votes.
Haley was probably doing the bidding of the so-called GOP establishment, which would be expected (from the power brokers in both parties) in crafting the storyline of a nationally televised political speech.
