Donald Trump speech beats Hillary Clinton in TV viewership
Hillary Clinton’s acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention was seen by 29.8 million people on the commercial networks, the Nielsen company said Friday.
“So I want to tell you tonight how we will empower Americans to live better lives”, Clinton said. “I will be a president for Democrats, Republicans, and Independents, for the struggling, the striving and the successful, for those who vote for me and those who don’t”. “And you know what, if fighting for affordable child care and paid family leave is playing the ‘woman card, ‘ then deal me in”. “Your cause is our cause”.
A separate pre-convention controversy over hacked Democratic Party emails showing favoritism for Clinton in the primary threatens to deepen the perception that Clinton prefers to play by her own rules. The small acts of defiance during her speech made an impression. “They don’t tell you why”, she said. Allen painted the choice between Clinton and Trump as one between “unity and hope” and “a dark place of discord and fear”.
“The only thing I’ve seen Donald Trump do when it comes to USA trade policy is run his mouth and line his pockets”, Brown said. That fell short of the 32.2 million people who watched Trump speak to the Republicans a week before.
Former Reagan administration official Doug Elmets announced he was casting his first vote for a Democrat in November, and urged other Republicans who “believe loyalty to our country is more important than loyalty to party” to do the same. He called this year’s Republican platform “most alarming” and laced with views on immigrants, gays, and women that don’t represent most Americans. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), Clinton said “our economy isn’t working the way it should because our democracy isn’t working the way it should”, and called for overturning the U.S. Supreme Court decision of Citizens United. She did spend time criticizing her Republican opponent, Donald Trump. “Happy for grandmothers and little girls and everyone in between”, Clinton said.
“Now, sometimes the people at this podium are new to the national stage”, she said, adding with sardonic timing: “As you know, I’m not one of those people”.
Their biggest task is helping Clinton overcome the mistrust of voters, which is reflected in her poll numbers. They both garner high “unpopularity” ratings. The surprise popularity of Sanders often put Clinton on the defense, having to explain why she was the best fit for the job.
She acknowledged her shortcomings as a candidate on Thursday.
But she emphasized that it’s her love of service that has kept her in the public spotlight and driven her desire for the presidency.
“I’m just incredibly excited about an overly qualified person who can do this and really excited about the fact that we’ve got a woman who can inspire women around the world in this country to dream incredible things”, Woods said.
Meanwhile, star power was much dimmer at the Republican meeting.
Trump, she suggested, has divided society and seeks to lead unilaterally.
“We have to heal the divides in our country”, Clinton said. “Will we stay true to that motto?” “No wonder people are anxious and looking for reassurance – looking for steady leadership”.
