Donald Trump state visit announcement sparks calls for protests
The prime minister became the first foreign leader to meet with President Trump at the White House since his inauguration on January 20.
Donald Trump and Theresa May left their first press conference hand-in-hand after the president said he was looking forward to a “fantastic relationship” with his British opposite number.
She also confirmed that the Queen would be hosting Trump later this year – in reality because the British government has asked her to – with the US President given the highest possible level of welcome.
World leaders have watched Trump’s first week in office with unease as he made threats of a trade war with Mexico and promoted an “America first” agenda.
Both leaders said they would work to establish trade negotiation agreements, the BBC reports.
Trump meanwhile was pleased with her call for all North Atlantic Treaty Organisation members to spend 2 percent of GDP on defence.
Bragging about his prediction that the British would vote to leave the European Union last June, Mr Trump said that he believed Brexit was “going to be a wonderful thing” for the UK.
On Thursday, Trump said: “I’m meeting with [May] tomorrow”.
The Trump / May press conference went as well as the Prime Minister’s team could have hoped. “I love the Mexican people. but as you know, Mexico. has out-negotiated us and beat us to a pulp”. “The unpredictable choices, the outbursts and the inward-looking United States of Trump no longer guarantees Europe’s security”. She says Britain wants to see them remain until a 2015-fire agreement for Ukraine is fully implemented. May and Trump both took office on a wave of populism, but deep differences remain between the pair. In her speech, May said Western leaders should “engage but beware” of Putin and should not accept Putin’s claim that Eastern Europe is now in his sphere of influence.Trump, on the other hand, wants a strong US relationship with Russian Federation to fight Islamic State militants.
As she seeks to give the United Kingdom a greater role in world affairs after Brexit, Ms. May said that Mr. Trump was correct in criticizing countries that rely on USA for defense and do not stand up for themselves.
The press conference came after Mr Trump’s senior adviser said USA sanctions against Russia and other issues would be on the table when the president talks with Russian president Vladimir Putin today.
