Donald Trump supporters mistakenly tweet Hamilton, Ont. theatre in Mike Pence spat
“We welcome Donald Trump here to Hamilton”.
Dixon has now defended the cast statement, saying the actors wanted “to stand up and spread a message of love and unity” following the bitterly divisive election campaign that culminated in Mr Trump’s surprise win on November 8.
Dixon told the hosts of The View that when the cast first heard that Pence – who has advocated for anti-gay policies and supported President-elect Donald Trump’s anti-immigration stance – would be in the audience, they felt that they had an opportunity to speak out.
Perhaps Dixon and the rest of the Hamilton cast should rethink those words, considering one of those inalienable rights is the right to vote – something many of them apparently don’t exercise as often as they should.
She noted the story has taken off “in a really unexpected way”, with coverage by worldwide news outlets and Twitter users defending them.
“I know this is a very anxious time for some people”. “Hamilton” is just an incredible production, incredibly talented people. I sincerely hope the cast members never apologize to Trump because they did nothing wrong. The actor concluded, “We truly thank you for sharing this show, this wonderful American story told by a diverse group of men and women of different colors, creeds, and orientations.”Pence attended the show with his daughter, Charlotte, as well as his nieces and nephew, according to one of his aides”.
“I checked my phone and noticed that there were various tweets to the Hamilton Theatre Inc”.
“Then when I opened the tweets it was the opposite of that”.
“When we arrived we heard a few boos, and we heard some cheers”, he said, “I nudged my kids and reminded them that is what freedom sounds like”.
The Hamilton Twitter account posted video and transcript of the statement following the performance. She’s also blocked some accounts.
Dixon said Pence was leaving the theater but stopped, turned and listened when he started to address the politician. “There are times to send messages and I don’t necessarily believe that was the right time”. He said everyone weighed in before taking the stage that night.
