Donald Trump tops John Kasich in his home state of Ohio
While the OH primary is still a month away, Donald Trump is beating current Gov. John Kasich in his own state of OH by 5 points, according to a new poll released Tuesday morning by Quinnipiac.
With Mr. Kasich spending most of his time these days on the Republican presidential campaign trail outside OH, the April 7 speech will mark the latest date yet for his update to lawmakers on where the state has been and where it’s going.
Kasich does best with Republicans who see themselves as moderate to liberal, but even there he’s in a virtual tie with Trump. Ted Cruz, and 13 percent said they’d vote for Florida Sen.
BW political science professor Lauren Copeland says if just Kasich and Trump were on the March 15 ballot, then Kasich would easily win with 55 percent of the vote, compared to just 38% for Trump. “If Trump can defeat Kasich in his home state, that would be an impressive demonstration of his strength in a state that is just now getting attention”.
Trump also has the most loyal voters.
With a margin of error of plus or minus 3.6 percent among the 759 GOP voters surveyed, it is by no means an insurmountable lead for Trump, with three weeks to go before Ohio’s 66-delegate, winner-take-all primary.
Kasich was first elected governor to the important swing-state of OH in 2010 and reelected in 2014, however is trailing Trump by 31 to 26 percent.
On the Democratic side, former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton would beat U.S. Sen. On the other hand, 57 percent said they view Trump favorably.
John Kasich has recently grabbed national headlines for running a positive presidential campaign while other Republican candidates are wrapped up in a storm of negative ads and bickering.
