Donald Trump tweets campaign ad featuring Nazi uniforms
On Tuesday, Donald Trump (or, should we say, Donald Trump’s Twitter account), tweeted one more plug for the GOP presidential candidate’s campaign.
John R. Schindler, a former professor at the U.S. Naval War College, appears to have been the first Twitter user to press the point. Reed Richardson found the stock image, by searching for “World War II soldiers”.
A soldier in the image seems to be wearing a “dot” camouflage uniform worn by the Waffen SS, an armed wing of Germany’s Nazi Party.
On the surface, Trump’s tweet was innocent enough. The reenactors appear to be wearing Nazi-style uniforms.
The picture was later linked to stock photos of modern-day reenactors in the Nazi gear, marching across a grassy field.
An all-caps caption declared: “We need real leadership”.
A closer look at the image of the marching soldiers at the bottom right of the photo reveals that those are, in fact, Waffen-SS with rifles. “We need results. Let’s put the USA back into business!”
UPDATE (3:54 PM EST): CNN’s MJ Lee reports that the Trump campaign claims “an intern accidentally posted questionable photo” and apologized. Michael Cohen, a Trump spokesman, reportedly pointed to Trump’s Tuesday event in Charlottesville, Virginia, and said the real-estate developer was not involved in the creation of the image.
