Donna Brazile To Serve As DNC Chief Through The Election
Embattled Democratic Party chair Debbie Wasserman Schultz said Sunday she is resigning, following a leak of emails suggesting an insider attempt to hobble the campaign of Hillary Clinton’s rival in the White House primaries Bernie Sanders. Her resignation is a result of the release of internal DNC e-mails by Wikileaks that allegedly show Democratic party officials attempting to aid the Clinton campaign during the primary election.
“I have a lot of admiration for her but she understands that for party unity it’s appropriate that she step aside and that we not be distracted”, said Rep. Elijah E. Cummings, a Baltimore Democrat who supported Clinton.
Clinton says that Wasserman Schultz will serve as honorary chair of her campaign’s 50-state program to help elect Democrats around the country.
US President Barack Obama also praised Wasserman Schultz, saying that during her tenure she “has had my back”. As the mother of my three fantastic children and the Representative of Florida’s 23rd congressional district, I know that electing Hillary Clinton as our next president is critical for America’s future.
In a written statement, the controversial party leader said she was “privileged to serve as the DNC Chair for five and a half years”.
He also said “party leadership must always remain impartial”, which he added was not the case in the 2016 Democratic primary race. She is said to be one of the poorest Congress members.
On NBC’s Meet The Press, Sanders wouldn’t say whether Schultz should be forced to resign before the Democratic convention begins. “I know she’s tried hard, but as some people probably know, I thought Bernie deserved somebody that was not critical to [ward] him”.
Brazile, now serving as DNC Vice Chair, “will lead party through the remainder of the 2016 election”, says party spokesman Luis Miranda on his personal Twitter account, according to Bloomberg News.
“Well I think it’s outrageous but it is not a great shock to me”, he told CNN. “This afternoon, I called her to let her know that I am grateful”. Early Sunday, Sanders reiterated his call for her resignation.
