Dortmund draws Madrid 2-2 to win group, break scoring record
Marco Reus was the star of the late show at the Santiago Bernabeu, hitting the equaliser two minutes from time. One goal and Dortmund will match the most goals ever scored in the tournament’s group stage – 20.
The holders will now have to face a group victor in the last 16, with Arsenal and Juventus among their potential opponents. “We had the game in our hand but we dropped intensity a bit. You need to carry on right until the end”, Zidane said.
Karim Benzema became just the sixth player to score 50 goals in the UEFA Champions League, moving into a tie with Thierry Henry on the competition’s all-time scoring list.
They finished 2-2 when the teams met in Dortmund last September as Andre Schuerrle’s late goal rescued the hosts after Ronaldo and Raphael Varane scored for Real and Aubameyang had netted for Borussia.
“We’re playing a final, a game that determines who wins the group and we’re at home so obviously we want to put on a big performance”.
“I have mixed emotions”.
The France global told BeIn after the game that his team’s main objective was still to come and for now finishing first or second in the group was not so concerning. Our objective is to always try and win the game, to finish first in the group.
Aubameyang said earlier this week he was unsure if he would remain at Dortmund beyond next summer, although Real are subject to a transfer ban that prohibits them from registering new players until January 2018. We now have to rest up before Saturday’s game.
Some of those supporters had whistled Madrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo after he had missed a number of relatively simple second-half chances, with the Portugal captain reacting angrily at one point and gesturing towards the crowd. Dortmund deserved first place.
The Portuguese side needed the win to confirm their progress and they did that in style against a team who until Wednedsay, have looked impressive in Europe. “They are first and we are second”.
“There were a lot of chances to score the third goal”. “We played a good match but couldn’t get the win, now we have to move on”.
Winning Group F over Real Madrid would be a nice feather in the cap for Dortmund, but, with a place in the round of 16 already secured, it isn’t of grave concern.
“We gave our all to come first”. We did everything to have achieved that, but that’s how it goes. “Winning is every team’s target and we are not any exception”. We won’t go over it again.
