Dr. Manny: Why the Medical Community Should Celebrate Trump’s Trust in Price
President-elect Donald Trump’s nomination of Georgia Congressman Tom Price to be US secretary of health and human services didn’t just send shock waves through California because of his plan to dismantle the Affordable Care Act.
For the past six years Dr. Price hasn’t just been complaining about Obamacare, he’s been crafting legislation to fix the problem. “From his plan to take no-copay birth control away from 55 million women and allow insurance companies to charge women more for the same health coverage, to his opposition to safe and legal abortion, Price could take women back decades”. It has since evolved into a replacement for it. This tendency is already visible in the replacement plans from Mr. Price and other Republicans.
“From our standpoint, we want to make sure that as many people as possible maintain (insurance) coverage”, said Dr. Mario Molina, CEO of Molina Healthcare moh , which provides Medicaid and Obamacare individual insurance plans.
White House spokesman Josh Earnest defended Obamacare on Tuesday, saying it had expanded coverage to millions of Americans, boosted consumer protections and shored up the finances of the Medicare program for the elderly.
Of course, there’s no guarantee that Price’s plan, or anything close to it, will end up being enacted. “I’m excited about his opportunity to go in there and fix this so we can have the best quality health care at a rate that we can all afford”.
“The fact that this report shows it’s getting easier, it seems like we should lay a good part of this at the door of the ACA”, she says.
“I tell people their job is to get through 2017”, said Slayton, who runs a brokerage agency in Naperville.
Congressional Republicans are working on a plan that would repeal the Medicaid expansion and the insurance subsidies for lower-income consumers. And 86 percent of them qualified for a tax credit or subsidy that brought down the cost of the average monthly premium.
Price is no stranger to Cherokee and represented parts of the county when he served as a state senator for District 56 prior to running for Congress.
Insurance broker Robert Slayton, past president of the Illinois State Association of Health Underwriters, said he’s hearing more questions from clients about buying exchange coverage for next year.
The decline in families worrying about medical bills corresponds with a huge increase in the number of people who have health insurance. Last year, 1,326,279 customers renewed their coverage and this year that number grew to 1,618,225.
President-elect Donald Trump and his nominee for U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services have doubled down on Republican promises to scuttle the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
Great idea, but it’s a little late for most Americans.
Even now, it is hard to see exactly how he will be able to both follow Price’s lead and keep his pledge to people with preëxisting conditions.
Insurers, who now submit individual plans to both the state and the federal government, say this will allow them to sell more flexible health plans. “Regular Medicare would become the province of affluent beneficiaries who can buy their way out of” private plans.
Trump did not address Price’s position on Medicare in a statement released by his transition team. The uptick in employment means many more people have insurance coverage through their employer.
Ever since the Affordable Care Act was signed into law in 2010, Republicans have tried to dismantle it, only to be thwarted by President Obama and his veto power. Some of these pieces may have appeared to be superfluous, but they were created to work together and support each other.
Enrollment has been surging since Election Day, federal officials said.
Price has just the right pedigree, experience and temperament to lead HHS through the many challenges it faces including, but not limited to, the repeal and replacement of ObamaCare.
