Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. honored during parade in Abilene
The nation will honor Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Saint Mary’s will celebrate the life of Martin Luther King Jr. this week with daily events on campus hosted by the Office of Civil and Social Engagement (OCSE).
The march featured an ocean of men, women and children marching along E. University Avenue to the King Center on Waldo Road.
The town’s annual celebration began at 9 a.m. with a march down Martin Luther King Jr.
So instead of “Equality Day” in Wyoming, let’s change that to what it really is, “Martin Luther King Jr Day” and put it to rest once and for all. Her mother passed away four days and one year ago. There also will be the obligatory reciting of Dr. King’s numerous inspirational quotes. 18 at Branches Catering, brought to the discussion more than two decades of experience in education and training and consulting on diversity matters on the local and national level.
At the reception, Newby, who turned 83 Sunday, said, “Dr. King gave me so much inspiration”.
“Love courage and action is the only answer if we still believe in that American dream for all of us”.
He said Christians must be “ever mindful of our role in not only welcoming, but also embracing and helping “the stranger” among us”.
“It’s always special for people around the Eastern campus and Charleston area to come together to build a better place and a better world that we’re all still searching for”, Ghostone said.
Blacks in the USA lack effective leaders and a strong family foundation to organize and carry out a revolution in the country, the researcher noted. “We still have a long way to go”, Robinson said.
Here in Missoula, Dr. King’s words speak to not only civil liberties and equality, but to charity and fellowship.
The keynote speaker at a prayer breakfast briefly acknowledged the removal of the Confederate flag from the state’s Capitol before talking at length about reducing the number of people in prisons. We need to do the same today, to work together, not just on Martin Luther King’s birthday, but all the time to do the same for the disenfranchised, the marginalized and those that are unfortunate.
She and her husband, Dr. C.B. Akins Sr., founded the BMW (Black Males Working) Academy that prepares young, at-risk African-American boys for college and work. It’s for everybody and he had to fight for that.
Arago Welch said he remembers as a kid coming to the first march, and his father worrying about his safety. When they were being attacked it looked pretty bad to the nation. “But we really admire Dr. King for his commitment to civil rights and helping others”.
The Prescott MLK Peace and Justice March was relatively quiet and orderly.
He walked 60 miles from Selma to Montgomery in 1995, part of a 30-year anniversary march.
“A dream becomes a vision when we complete the work”, Ward said.
Cynthia Mingo said King’s dream is about helping all people. “I can do multiple things that makes me free”.
“What better way to honor him than to pay those same respects to him, as he has done for us”, Ghostone said.
“In the 21st century, we must follow the example set forth by Dr. King and expand the American Dream to ensure every American has access to equal opportunity”, Rubio said. “We have to keep the dream alive and we have to dream bigger”.
