Draft over, and now the Summer of Durant has arrived
What does it mean for each team? He’s been a great citizen of Oklahoma City, and we’re confident that he’s going to continue his career trajectory with the Magic in Orlando.
Ibaka, 26, finishes his Thunder career with 1,300 blocked shots. Rather than wait that situation out and try to fix it – as they did with Reggie Jackson before finally sending him to the Detroit Pistons in 2015 – the Thunder tried once again to get ahead of the problem.
Presuming the Thunder can re-sign All-Star forward Kevin Durant, an unrestricted free agent, it’s worth asking whether the Ibaka trade provides the boost the Thunder need. Even full-year ones often can’t garner full price for a player, though that trend has been bucked a bit this week, first with the Bulls receiving a large haul from the Knicks for one season of Derrick Rose and second with the Ibaka swap.
Oladipo, meanwhile, is entering his prime after three seasons in the league.
Oladipo fills a void for the Thunder, who have struggled to find a steady shooting guard since trading James Harden to Houston in 2012. With free agency approaching July 1, there may be more to come. In 524 career games with the team, 413 starts, the forward averaged 11.6 points, 7.4 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game on 52 percent shooting from the floor.
Will Serge Ibaka’s departure impact Kevin Durant’s decision?
Flying dunks, darting penetration, explosiveness, yes, but don’t assume Oladipo’s joining the first unit. He averaged 16 points and 4.8 rebounds last season. For the Thunder they lacked quality guards.
“They were 30 minutes away from the finals”, Sabonis said.
If Oklahoma City wants a shot at another playoff bid, securing a deal with Durant is important.
Now who starts at PF for the Thunder. Before thinking about matching up with the Warriors, Oklahoma City must get Durant’s signature on a new contract.
Oklahoma City said the exchange positioned the team to build on its versatility, depth and skill.
Ilyasova is an intriguing addition because his role will likely be very limited.
Sabonis is a bit of a more traditional big man compared to Ilyasova.
The Minnesota Timberwolves used the No. 5 pick on Providence junior Kris Dunn, a two-time Defensive Player of the Year in the Big East who should fit nicely for new coach Tom Thibodeau.
For Orlando, the plan for next season is a bit clearer.
Now we discussed what they gave up. Especially next to another poor defender in Nikola Vucevic. Assuming they retain a similar makeup, they have loads of different lineups to try, and because of that, they could be more creative with Oladipo than merely dropping him into the starting five. However, they do already have Evan Fournier, Elfrid Payton, and Mario Hezonja running the backcourt. The 1-2 punch that will Westbrook and Oladipo could turn into one of the best duos in the league and could be one of the best backcourts in the league.
Losing out on Sabonis is the strangest part for the Magic.
Sabonis, the son of Hall of Fame big man Arvydas Sabonis who starred for the Soviet Union, told ESPN that his rights were traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder and the National Basketball Association made the trade official about two hours later.
After reviewing the trade, the motive of the Magic is still unclear. This trade was done for two reason, the first was pretty obvious- give Durant the pieces he needs to get him to stay and the other was to bring in another offensive-minded player to help take the pressure of their two stars.
