Drafting Buccaneers: 5 Players to Watch Monday at the Combine
Myles Garrett went into the 2017 National Football League scouting combine as the No. 1 overall prospect in the draft, and nothing he did during the event made that assessment change. “He probably projects to be a [weakside linebacker], but just the fact that he showed the flexibility and his pass-rush ability, he showed really good versatility”, said one executive. DB Jalen Myrick (Minnesota) and WR Curtis Samuel (Ohio State) clocked in at 4.29 and 4.31, respectively. Melifonwu is universally considered the third best safety in the draft and a second round pick, but Monday might have shot him up into the first.
Godwin measured in at 6-foot-1 and 209 pounds, and ran a very nice 4.42 40-yard dash, which was top five among all receivers. First, he didn’t run a 4.12 – he ran a 4.13.
He has time to right the ship, but getting sent home from the combine for shouting in a hospital line is not a good look. With the free agency period set to begin at 4 p.m. on March 9, things are certainly expected to change before the draft. Watson and Trubisky couldn’t beat the time that Knight ran in group one.
The quarterback is the face of the franchise, and the name being thrown around pre-draft as a top prospect at the position is Mitch Trubisky.
Depth Exhibited at Tight End: The Falcons used one of their draft picks on a tight end a year ago, selecting Stanford’s Austin Hooper in the third round, but that doesn’t mean they’ll avoid that position in April.
Overall, this looks like a deep class for wide receivers.
It isn’t Butt’s fault, but with all the tight ends performing so well, his injury will move him to an afterthought.
But with Jones and Tate already under contract, choosing Ross – or any other receiver for that matter – is a decision that likely would be raked by some analysts and especially fans, with so many needs at so many other positions.
Among the weekend participants were tight end Darrell Daniels, outside linebacker Joe Mathis, and defensive lineman Elijah Qualls, who all had solid showings themselves.
O.J. Howard, TE, Alabama – Just as he was at the Senior Bowl, Howard was one of the stars of the combine. Texas A&M DE Myles Garrett, who stands at 6-foot-5 and 270 pounds, ran a 4.64. He caught the ball well and has the body to be an in-line blocker. He was fourth among tight ends in the 40-yard dash, finishing with a time of 4.55, and also finished sixth in the three cone drill with a time of 7.09.
Engram might not have the size to be an in-line blocker at the next level but will be a match nightmare for teams.
