Draymond Green-OJ Mayo scuffle punctuates Warriors’ win over Bucks
Teammate Stephen Curry added 26 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists in the win, while Carter-Williams scored a team-high 24 points for Milwaukee. Golden State is 11-0 at Oracle, its best home start since a franchise-best 12-0 to begin 1975-76. Curry got a steal on Milwaukee’s next possession and made two free throws and then fed Andre Iguodala for a 3-pointer from the corner to make it a seven-point game and seal the win. A week after Milwaukee fans predicted Golden State’s first loss with “24-1” T-shirts, a handful of Warriors fans responded by wearing shirts with “10-18” written on the front for the rematch with the Bucks in reference to what they expected Milwaukee’s record to be after the game.
“We looked like we ran out of gas a little bit”, Warriors interim coach Luke Walton said.
The Milwaukee Bucks continued to be a true nemesis for the league’s defending champions.
O.J. Mayo approached the Warriors’ Draymond Green following the game and challenged him on comments Green had made about the Bucks’ Michael Carter-Williams.
But Warriors forward Draymond Green scored eight consecutive points to ignite a surge that saw Golden State pull level at 100-100 with 6:08 to play.
After allowing Milwaukee to shoot 59.5 percent in the first half, the Warriors held the Bucks to 38.1 percent in the third quarter and 32.1 percent in the fourth. The Bucks can contest more three-pointers than most teams, and Giannis Antetokounmpo is able to back smaller defenders into the post.
“It’s good to have a few big-scoring games here or there just to let teams know they can’t focus so much on Steph”, said Thompson, who went 8 of 13 from 3-point range.
“We’re looking forward to it, man. Obviously a team that gave us our one in the loss column, and we felt they could have won with a little more class”. “We’ve just got to keep working on it, keep trusting our coaches and keep having faith in each other”.
The overwhelming majority of the time, Green doesn’t need anyone to get him to initiate the team’s energy and trash-talking. “We did it pretty decent for 18 minutes but you have to do it for all 48 minutes because they put them up quickly”. In the back and forth final minutes of the game, the Warriors broke away and beat the Bucks 121-112.
Tuesday’s eight-point margin was not a true reflection of proceedings after the Warriors led 111-83 at the start of the final quarter in Indianapolis.
Seven Bucks scored in double figures, including Monroe, who had a second consecutive double-double against the Warriors with 10 points and 13 rebounds to go with seven assists. He cut Detroit’s lead by making an off-balance three-pointer to cut it to 145-144 with 4.7 seconds left. Bucks C Greg Monroe was given the thumbs-up to return from a two-game absence after testing his sore left knee about an hour before the game….
Mayo’s use of the word “class” might have been pointed, after members of the Warriors complained they thought the Bucks lacked class in their win over the Warriors last week. “You can’t turn the ball over against these guys”.
