Dresden riots: Protesters in Germany attack refugee buses shouting ‘foreigners
German Justice Minister Heiko Maas has condemned anti-migrant violence in the eastern-German town of Heidenau. “But all EU countries must become more aware of their responsibilities”.
Asked about Hungary’s effort to build a 4-meter (13-foot) high fence to preventmigrants crossing its border with Serbia, de Maiziere said that “if other countries would abide by the law, then Hungary wouldn’t build a fence”.
Germany’s interior minister on Thursday criticized Europe’s failure to tackle the refugee crisis, saying the principle of passport-free travel that exists across much of the continent is at risk. During the first six months of the year there were at least 173 far-right incidents related to refugees in Germany – including eight cases of arson – considerably more than during the same period last year.
De Maiziere said he and Cazeneuve agree Italy and Greece need considerable EU help to set up “waiting areas” for newly arrived refugees. The influx is putting pressure on local authorities scrambling to house and care for the new arrivals, mainly people escaping war in the Middle East and Africa.
He also urged a “deepening of cooperation among police and intelligence services” along the lines of a deal agreed Thursday between France and Britain to combat people smuggling at Calais.
Leader of the SPD, Thomas Oppermann told the Rheinischen Post newspaper that Europe needed “a new refugee arrangement” – suggesting that the Dublin agreement had “collapsed”.
The border agency Frontex has said some 340,000 migrants arrived in the EU this year alone, many of whom travelled in unsafe, rickety boats to Italy and Greece.
There have been a number of attacks on shelters for asylum seekers in recent months, but the government has repeatedly spoken out against such actions.
So, maybe Merkel will be forced to change her mind or EU member states will be forced to implement a clearer asylum policy, one that is fit for goal.
