Driver dies in crash after leading CHP on chase
– A CHP chase in San Jose ended with a deadly rollover crash early Wednesday morning.
As the driver went to exit the freeway at Winchester Boulevard, he lost control of the auto in a sharp right turn and hit a dirt berm on the off-ramp, Lee said.
The vehicle exited onto Moorpark and crashed. The driver’s 18-year-old female passenger suffered minor injuries and was taken to the hospital.
The driver, later identified as Avalos, fled from officers and drove at speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour while swerving through traffic, CHP officials said. A passenger in the Accord was transported to the hospital with minor injuries, according to the CHP.
Officers say the suspect’s vehicle was stolen from Los Banos.
During the pursuit, a CHP vehicle struck the curb and a wrong-way sign, which shattered the patrol car’s windshield.
Eastbound Highway 37 is blocked just near the Marin County line this afternoon following a fatal crash involving two big-rigs and several other vehicles, the California Highway Patrol said.
