Drogba gets superstar treatment, dons No. 11, at first Montreal Impact event
The official MLS website dispatched Olivier Tremblay to document Drogba’s big welcome but the ensuing din was so loud that it rendered all of his tapes useless.
He has now made good on that declaration, signing with the Montreal Impact, which ended the previous season at the bottom of the table.
Drogba also rubbished claims that he could be the “superstar” of the group, while admitting he was surprised by all the fans greeting him at the airport on Wednesday.
“It’s only the way the people look at you – in the dressing room all the players are the same”, he said.
Drogba, who played his football in England, Turkey, China and France, was greeted by hundreds of fans at the Pierre Elliott Trudeau worldwide Airport ahead of his move to the Montreal Impact.
“It’s an honor to welcome Didier Drogba to the Impact”, club president Joey Saputo said. From the first conversation I had with him, I felt that he really wanted to play in Montreal. “This is a single of the largest days in club background and his arrival to the club will be advantageous in every factor”.
Drogba left English Premier League side Chelsea at the end of last season, ending his second stint at the London club with total figures of 164 goals in 381 appearances. “He has demonstrated his qualities as a striker at the highest level in Europe”, Impact technical director Adam Braz said.
